In some patients, the masseter muscle (which is a chewing muscle) is enlarged creating extra facial width. The injection selectively weakens this muscle over time leading to an overall reduction in the size of this muscle. However, an injection of this type is realised by the FDA as an “off-labelled use”; thus, it should be performed by someone experienced because of potential and unwanted adverse effects.
The masseter muscle, one of the chewing muscles, is sometimes enlarged causing a squaring of the facial shape. It occurs most often in those of asian heritage and can be helped by injectable treatments.
Some personal habits can be directly attributed to an enlarged jaw muscles (the masseter). Excessive gum chewing, chewing hard items like ice or tougher meats or biltong can all can lead to an enlarged masseter muscle. Stress can lead to bruxism (grinding your teeth at night -this can be treated with Injectables for Bruxism or Teeth Clenching) which can enlarge your masseter as well.
Injectables will cause some shrinkage of the muscle and narrow the jaw, creating a more angular and feminine facial shape. This effect can be further enhanced by filling the cheek bone area with facial fillers / Cheek Augmentation to create the optimal look for our patients.

These injectables can reduce the overall size of the masseter muscle, allowing for improved facial proportions in a non-invasive manner.
Skin Renewal's special technique of injection makes this a pain free and bruise free experience. Many patients through come on lunch breaks to have this procedure done and are able to return to the office immediately after. Patients typically notice softening of the masseter muscle at one week and softening of the jawline at 6 weeks. Some researchers have noticed "permanent changes" to the jawline after 2-3 treatments. However, it is reasonable for patients to expect long term benefit but not permanent changes.
Our Doctors would usually consider a combination approach, using filler, and/or possible threads, combined with skin tightening and lifting treatments such as Carboxytherapy, Radiofrequency, Titan Laser, ND:Yag Skin tightening and Laser genesis. A thorough Dr's consultation would be the best way to discuss the most suitable solution. I am including more information about filler and threads and also for Exilis, herewith.
Dermal fillers are a quick, safe and effective way of plumping and erasing deep lines and volume loss in the skin and one of the most commonly performed treatments at our clinics. Dermal fillers are a substance called Hyaluronic Acid. It occurs naturally in our skin but decreases with age, leaving us with volume loss resulting in deep lines and furrows.
We are proud to offer The MD Codes ™ - a unique method of injecting. Dr Mauricio de Maio developed the MD Codes ™ as a guide for the use of injectables in medical aesthetics. The MD Codes™ are a series of precise sites that guide where and how the injections are administered. They consist of multiple injection sites divided into anatomical areas.
Injectable jaw reduction is a relatively painless, a no downtime procedure which can be performed in an office setting. Jaw reduction surgery is an invasive surgical procedure involving either cutting or shaving to the mandible (jaw bone) to help reshape it.
Injectable jaw reduction can create a natural, subtle improvement to the area without any of the downtime or potential complications that are associated with surgery. The real use for injecting into the masseter muscle is to relieve muscle tension or migraine headaches from Bruxism or teeth clenching. The long term benefit is preventing tiny fractures of one's teeth from the chronic pressure of Bruxism.
· The need for a bite plate may be minimized.
· For those with uncontrollable headaches, that this has some benefit.
· The pain from TMJ may also be improved as Injectable jaw reduction is actually one of the treatments for TMJ discomfort.
In contrast: Jaw reduction surgery has an extensive recovery period, can cause sensation issues, dental alignment issues, and potential for pain along the TMJ area.
In patients treated by one of our experienced doctors at Skin Renewal there is no pain after the injection.
There is no pain with eating. We recommend the restriction of gum chewing, chewing candies, tougher meat products, biltong meat products.
Skin Renewal doctors recommend that patients are treated with a second treatment 2-4 months after the initial treatment. Most patients do not need a third treatment, however, for patients seeking further correction this can be done to achieve the desired effect.
After patients are injected with 2 treatments, most patients do not need additional treatments. Those that seek in further contouring typically come for repeat injections every 6 months.
Yes, since the muscle will not atrophy on its own. The injection will change the physical mass of the muscle and make it less prominent.
Any patient who has a neuromuscular disorder such as Myasthensia Gravis or Lambert Eaton Syndrome should not receive Injections. In addition, patients who are pregnant or breast feeding should avoid injections. Patients with active dental and skin infections should avoid injections in the masseter area as well.
Injectable treatments to the masseter are customized for every patient. There are a couple reasons as the why the injections might not have created an improvement:
In a case like this, it is going to require a combination approach. Firstly, we need to look at treatments to stimulate collagen and elastin production in the skin, to get the skin's elasticity as restored as possible and to start the action of tightening up the loose skin. treatments such as ND:Yag Skin tightening, Radiofrequency, carboxytherapy, Needling and Titan are all possible treatment options. The second thing that will need to be addressed is the issue of volume loss. Often when someone loses a lot of weight, they also lose facial volume, causing the skin to sag and look aged, so replacing some of the lost facial volume with dermal fillers can be extremely helpful. Lastly, a good homecare regime needs to be planned for you, in order to hydrate, restore and protect your skin. Good medical topicals go a long way to reinforce and maintain your treatment results.
There is no set number of units or dosage used for treating the masseter hypertrophy. The average necessary for most patients is 25 units per side, with a great variation based on the size of the muscle.
Jaw Line Contouring with Muscle Relaxing Injections is a “walk in walk out” treatment. Many patients come during their lunch break to perform the jaw line reshaping with Muscle Relaxing Injections and return straight to work or resume normal duties. However, we advise not to massage your face for a few days following the procedure.
A much safer route is to use injectables in conjunction with facial fillers and/or skin resurfacing. Injectables have found a defined role in restoring facial harmony by removing unwanted lines and wrinkles in areas such as: between the head of the eyebrows (glabella), the forehead, and around the eyes (crow’s feet). Also, injectables can elevate the corners of the mouth and soften the vertical lines of the upper lip. Soft tissue filler injections can powerfully make the face appear thinner by adding volume to the cheeks, contouring the jaw line, and soften major and minor facial wrinkle lines, etc. A combination approach is the way to go!
Muscle relaxing injections and anti-wrinkle Injections can be used to treat sweating under the arms. The anti-wrinkle injection product blocks the signal between the nerve and the sweat gland and reduces excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) for about 8 months. The sweating will slowly return to normal after this period.
Muscle Relaxing Injections and Anti Wrinkle Injections are also popular cosmetic treatments to reduce frown lines, crows feet and wrinkles and a gummy smile. Anti Wrinkle Injections can be used in conjunction with dermal fillers to achieve optimal results in facial rejuvenation.
