Fitzpatrick Skin Type II

When it comes to treating patients safely and effectively with any laser or medical-grade devices, understanding Fitzpatrick skin types and the effects of different laser technologies out there is extremely critical.

The Fitzpatrick skin type system was developed by a Harvard dermatologist in the 1970s. It is used as a measurement tool to determine and classify how different skin types react to ultraviolet light (UV). The Fitzpatrick system takes into account, genetic makeup and reaction to sun exposure (burning and tanning and how it affects the skin).

Fitzpatrick skin types

People with Skin Type II are usually fair with blue eyes, light or fair skin. They manage to get a light tan with repeated exposure to the sun but have a high risk for skin cancer (including melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer). These skin types are therefore advised to take extreme care, use sunscreen and protect themselves from harmful UV rays as extreme sun exposure can result in serious damage, premature ageing, and skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinoma SCC, Basal cell Carcinoma BCC and Melanoma.

Best skincare practices for Fitzpatrick Skin Type II

  • Minimise sun damage
  • Even out pigmentation
  • Reverse age-related changes like wrinkles
  • Check for skin cancers

Skin Type II individuals are conducive to the usual aesthetic treatments and most treatments can safely be done without the danger of adverse side effects such as hyper- or hypopigmentation occurring.

At Skin Renewal, each client is booked for a consultation with a doctor before any treatments are done. As every person has a unique set of needs, an individualized package is worked out for each client to ensure optimal results.
